1984- Animal Farm

the shoe throwing incident just brought this up.- In 1984 I was in the 4th Std , we did not have a television at our place and the day of Indira gandhi’s death was a very weird one. One ,for the first time I saw a Army platoon upclose taking a march and the other, was the first state funeral on TV. We were at a friends house watching it when my friends dad walked in with some friends who looked deriously happy like they had come from some football match , in his hand he had some mixture( chanachur ) and some beer bottles in the other. he offered me some and i somehow didnt feel like taking any of it , they had raided the bar of some sikh and had come back home to share the spoils.I remember being outraged as a kid as something that didnt seem right and each time I think of 1984 more than Indira gandhi’s death its those grubby hands holding the mixture that comes to mind. We should not forget 1984.

Rankin and edinburgh

whats it about the place and the crime.have been reading two crime fiction authors in the last two odd years. Both are places that I have not visited and have seen less on film. One is Mankell and the other is Rankin one based in Sweden and the other in Edinburgh. In time what has developed is this image of a place that is so vivid that I wonder what would happen when I do visit the place.

Everyone i like has been talking about the movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tell_No_One ) , want to see it but then it would take some time before it is released here. So went ahead and bought the book.super pacing and though i tried going slow i couldnt , should be done with the book tonight. I just hope that it doesnt end pathetically !

A few years back if someone told me that they would deprive me of television for a few days then I would have died a million deaths, how will i watch star trek , what about spiderman , i cant miss 70s show …. but right now I just want to shut down everything , no TV , no internet , no news , no radio nothing. Surely it will give me less to choose from , less to worry about.

A Winters Tale

winters, even the mild one in bombay generally make me quite happy , i like the nip , having a cup of tea ,less light , not doing much , generally feeling lazy , hot food , lit up stores … all of it

but this winter has been dreary , i dont know if it is because i am turning old , or it is the bloody economy ( you can always blame that ) or a general sense of depression…
i just want it to end and the sun to start shining so then i can hate the sweat , the light …. must be age

have been reading quite a bit of kapuscinski for the past few days and the imagery of his books keep coming back like some delayed high …. rajeev was talking about how filmable the books are , the searing sun , the serengeti, accara , the despots but then we ended up agreeing that the book’s beauty is that if you havent been to Africa , it lets you create an imagery of your own.

He is a lot like Borges … fantastical magical reality .some fact some fiction.

this is a followup to the earlier post , saw the movie this saturday and came back depressed. No i didnt hate the movie , its just that the movie is depressing. There are bits in the movie which are a lil simplistic and preachy but then for most of the parts the movie is well shot , very well acted and tightly written. For once Mumbai is shot like Mumbai , no pans of the Queens Necklace , no perfuntory dharavi shots … Some really brilliant acting Irfan Khan as the Tamil Christian tea vendor ( his accent and costume are bang on ), Kay Kay as the hindu bigot , Paresh Rawal as the retiring cop and Vijay Maurya ( as the honest cop … his turn is the best ).Soha and Madhavan i didnt care for.

These days when i get back from work i take this slightly circuitous route back home through a slum and not the mail road , what i have noted is that in comparison to the main road people here take it open themselves to ensure that the narrow path stays clear and there is constant smooth traffic.Its claustrophobic and you feel that the houses and shops will eat you up anytime but you save 20 mins for sure.

talking about bombay and travel a new movie realeases today Mumbai Meri Jaan . Directed by Nishikanth Kamat its on life post the Bombay train blasts. Saw his earlier movie Dombivali Fast and was very impressed , its inspired by Falling Down but then no movie has seemed so right for Bombay , and the opening scenes with local trains in a shed late at night amazingly well done

just copied and pasted the earlier posts from Blogspot , just that google is not letting me log back on.. was reading some of the blogs and they are oh so immature and bloody pretentious.

Saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind yesterday once again yesterday. Rajeev had told me this earlier and when it came back again it still took me by surprise.There is this bit in which Jim Carrey is in Kate Winslet’s aptmt and there is thing Hindi Music playing in the background and it goes on and on .. some old laxmikant pyarelal song .. weird

ah i am back , they say u are not a blogger unless and until u do this by habit , every day ,every alternate day ,every week , some ritualistic time driven act… cant do it .i am going to be a watch from the sidelines blogger .visit temple but look at the architecture or the women … god can wait ..and dont kill anyone who think Jesus lives ,will come back, has left the building ,whatever …
have been attempting a fruit diet for lunch , some grapes , an apple two oranges … even the goddamn goo that RTI serves as lunch has started looking very appetising.
have been getting all nostalgic , must be the 30 thing coming on ,another year and i will hit that figure … there was this period in school when every single day and that included days before exams too we would cycle to the dyke and just sit and throw stones in the reservoir..get all kicked about it raining as we scrambled back home.. these days i think my office chair has become a part of my anatomy.
